Resolution No.
WHEREAS, the Hawaii County Council, County of Hawaii, State of
Hawaii is charged with the health, safety and welfare of the people
of Hawaii County; and,
WHEREAS, the availability of health services at reasonable cost
contributes directly to maintaining the well being of the people; and,
WHEREAS, the Department of Health, State of Hawaii is proposing
effective January 1, 1973, increases in hospital rates throughout
the State as follows: Maluhia Hospital, 4.8%; Hilo Hospital, 5.9%;
Honokaa Hospital, 2.2%; Kona Hospital, 1.0%; Kau Hospital, 10.7%;
Maui Memorial Hospital, 2.2%; Hana Medical Center, 2.2%; Kauai Veterans'
Memorial Hospital, 5.6%; Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital, 4.3%;
and Kula Sanatorium, 23.2966; and,
WHEREAS, a raise in hospital rates would prove a hardship to
many of our people by making health services more expensive and
consequently more difficult to obtain; and,
WHEREAS, such a raise in hospital rates would adversely affect
the health, welfare and the pocket books of the people of Hawaii; and,
WHEREAS, there has been little or no communication to the public
on this subject to explain and justify the necessity of said increases;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Hawaii County Council,
County of Hawaii, State of Hawaii, requests that the Department of
Health, State of Hawaii, defer the proposed increases until such time
as the Department of Health can justify or give their rationale for
proposing an additional financial burden upon its people; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
be and is hereby authorized and directed to transmit copies of this
Resolution to the Department of Health, Governor John A. Burns,
Senate President David McClung and Speaker of the House Tadao Beppu
as evidence of the Hawaii County Council's deep concern on this
issue and the anticipated financial hardship it will cause many of
our people.
