wHrREAS, the Award of Merit is presented annually by
the American Association for State and Local history in
recognition of significant contributions made by individuals
and institutions to state and local history; and
WHEREAS, the National Awards Committee of the Association
for State and Local History at its meeting held in _Edmonton,
Alberta, Canada, on Septerber 16-18, 1973, voted MRS. JOHN
(VIOLET) HANSFN of Volcano, Hawaii, as this year's recipient
of the Award of Merit; and
WHEREAS,, the selection of MRS. HANSEN for this coveted
award was in recognition of her "long-standing contributions
to the history of Hawaii:; and
WHEREAS, for those who know and have worked with
MRS. HANSEN, the Award of Merit represents not only national
recognition of her work, but is a long overdue tribute to
one who has devoted much of her life to the study and
preservation of the history and culture of the Hawaiian people-,
and
WHERU.S, the people of Hawaii join today in honoring
MRS. HANSEN as the ATnerican Association for State and Local
History's choice for the Award of lKerit,
NOVI? THERXXORE., BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII that it takes this means to congratulate
MRS. HANSEN for being selected as the recipient of the
American Association for State and Local History's Award of
Merit for 1973.
RE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County
of Hawaii expresses its deep appreciation to MRS. ILA&TSEN for
her valuable contribi)tion to the preservation of Hawaii's
history.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVIED that the County Clerk is hereby
directed to transmit a copy of this resolution to MRS. HANSEN.
