HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 150 Draft 01 1972-1976REsoLuTiox NO. 1.'> WHEREAS, YOSHINOBU (YOSHI) 4YAKAWA. was barn and raised on the Big Island and started life with very humble beginnings.- and eginnings; and WHEREAS,, YOSHI OYAKAWA started on the road to fare and outstanding personal achievement in the athletic world by learning to swim in the rivers of Fapaikou, Hawaii; and WHEREAS, YOSHI OYAKAWA won All-American honors at Hila High School in 1950 and 1951; and WHEREAS, YOSHI OYAKAWA reached a most sought-after goal in 1952, when he was co --captain of the U . S . Olympic Swimming Team and won the 100 -meter backstroke gall medal at Helsinki, Finland; and WHEREAS,. YOSHI OYAKAWA in 1955 was co -captain of the Ohio State University Swimming `seam and was selected for the 1956 Melbourne Olympics; and FSE EAS , YOSHI OYAKAWA was elected to the Helms Swimming :all of Fame earlier this Year and will be inducted into the Helms Swimming Hall of Fame on December 29, 1973, in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida- and WHEREAS, YOSHI OYAKAWA probably is considered by many to be the last of the great straight-arm style of backstroke swimmers in international competition- and WHEREAS.. YOSHI OYAKAWA is one of only five swimmers to win the ,same event in National Collegiate Athletic Association competition four years in a row.- and -------------------- ----------- .,._ UREAS, during YOSHI OYAKA'A's outstanding Career, he won Six Big Ten, seven NCAA, four National MU Indoor and five National AAU Outdoor titles and set world records in the 100 and 200 --yard backstroke events, and the 100 and 200 --meter backstroke; and WHEREAS, through his achievements, YOSHI OYAKAWA has inspired the hearts of young swimmers everywhere and brought recognition to the Big Island, NOW, THEREPOR.E , BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it dues hereby extend to YOSHINOBU OYAKAWA its wannest congratulations and commend hien for attaining international fame and personal success.
