IFRRAS , 11ARLXV CLEVELAND has devoted his life to the
betterment of his fellow roan and the advancement of society
at both national and international levels; and
WHEREAS, WUUJ0 CLEVELAND has nerved as President of
the University of Hawaii for nearly fine years with singular
honor, dedication, and achievement; and
WhLRLAS, HARLAN CLEWLA D courageously accepted the University
Presidency to begin his tenure in one of the most difficult
periods of student unrest and subsequently restored calm to
the campus by his sure and steady handling of events; and
WHEREAS, by his leadership and vision the University has
undergone great expansion into a statewide system of higher
education with broader accessibility for all, into a progressive
institution of the 170s, and into a University in the fullest
sense of the ward with the establishment of the Law School and
Medical School; and
WHERE -AAS, under his administration, the University has attained
international recognition for academic excellence in such fields
as the urine sciences, astronomy, and Asian and Pacific Studies,
the last attracting substantial grants from Korea and Japan to
further develop that excellence; and.
WHEREAS, under his leadership the University has commanded
increasing awareness of and respect for the duality of its resources,
thereby attracting outstanding people to the faculty and increasing
numbers of research grants; and
WHEREAS, as an active scholar, he has represented the
University and Hawaii with distinction in national and international
academic communities, serving on noteworthy commissions and publishing
books and articles of scholarship and relevancy; and
WELREAS , HARLAN CLM7EINU has broadened. the University's
concern for community service, making the University an
integral part of the future deve3apent of t►e State; and
VF1EPXAS, 112hRL CLFW.LAND has submitted his resignation
to the Board of Regents of the University of Hawaii,
NOW, THEREFOREo, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF TIAWAII that it extends to HARLAN CLEVELAND its warmest
"Mahalou for his worthy and enduring contributions to the
advancement of higher education in Hawaii and, through it,
for the betterment of our community; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of
Hawaii he and is hereby directed to transmit a true copy of this
resolution to HARLAN CLEOMLAND as evidence of the County's
heartfelt appreciation and respect for his dedication to the
educational needs of our people, and that it further extends to
hire its warmest hest wishes for continued success and happiness
in future endeavors.
