WHEREAS, the Alakai Kala A'Popo Youth Group was
awarded a $750 fourth prize in the National Summer Action
1973 competition from several hundred entries throughout
the United States; and
WHEREAS, with assistance from the Naalehu community
and the Hawaii County Economic Opportunity Council,,
Alakai Kala A' Popo has mobilized a wide variety of public
and private resources in order to establish a youth
activities center* and
WHEREAS, the dismantling of an unused building in.,
Punaluu., transporting it to Naalehu and rebuilding it
involved a massive community effort; and
WHEREAS, the project has afforded the Naalehu youths
and those who assisted an opportunity to demonstrate that
the young people of today can play a viable role in human
and social development* and
WHEREAS, the members of the Alakai Kala A' Popo, which
means Leaders of Tomorrow, have shown the kind of qualities
associated with their Club's name; and
WHEREAS, the planning and development which Alakai.
Kala A' Popo has undertaken is worthy of the national
recognition which it has received,
NOW, TMREPORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CDtWCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII that this body extends its congratulations
to the Alakai Kala A' Popo Youth Group for its commendable
activities;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk be
instructed to forward a true copy of this resolution to
the Alakai Kala A' Popo Youth Group and to the Hawaii
County Economic Opportunity Council.
