Resolution No. 211
WHEREAS, Young Brothers, Ltd., has filed a petition
with the Public Utilities Commission requesting a modification
of the published sailing schedule from Kawaihae for a trial
period of six months; and
WHEREAS, granting Young Brothers., Ltd.'s request will have
a detrimental effect on the farmers and ranchers in the Waimea
area resulting in irreparable harm; and
WHEREAS, the shipping of vegetable products from Waimea
on a one -sailing per week schedule from Kawaihae will result
in harm because of the limited vacuum cooling, refrigeration
and transporting capacity; and
WHEREAS, a one -sailing per week schedule will affect the
quality of the vegetable products picked and detrimentally
affect the shelf life of such products in the grocery store
in Honolulu; and
WHEREAS, ranchers in the Waimea and Kona areas will be
affected by increased cost of trucking, loading on to the
barges and finishing of the cattle in the feed lots in
Honolulu; and
WHEREAS, ranchers will lose substantial income because
of shrinkage as a result of the stress placed on the cattle
during a longer sailing schedule; and
WHEREAS, there is a need for an extension of the shipping
schedule rather than curtailment because of the promotion of
diversified agriculture production in the Kohala area and the
need for semi-weekly receipt of goods for merchants in Waimea
and Kona,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII that it strongly recommends that the Public
Utilities Commission deny the petition by Young Brothers,
Ltd., for a change in shipping schedule from Kawaihae to
one sailing per week.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of
Hawaii be and is hereby ordered to transmit true copies of
this resolution to Mr. L. W. Dolim, Chairman of the Public
Utilities Commission, as testimony of the County's opposition
to the application of Young Brothers, Ltd., in Docket
No. 2455 for a once -a -week sailing from Kawaihae.
