WHEREAS, the Haili Church is presently observing
a 10 -month long sesquicentennial celebration in commemora-
tion of 150 years of its eventful and historically rich
existence; and
WTIEREAS, Haili Church began as a fulfillment of a
wish of a Hawaiian youth from Kalu named Henry Opukahaia
whose friendship with New England Congregationalists
resulted in the establishment of the first Christian mission
in May 1824, near the Wailoa River which in turn became
the predecessor to the present Haili Church Complex; and
WHEREAS, during its memorable history Haili Church
has attained State and National prominence through its
perennial excellence in choral singing accomplished by
choir groups encompassing age levels from children to
senior citizens.- and
WHEREAS, throughout these years Haili Church has
been a tower of strength and stability in providing the
always needed religious teachings to many of our citizenry
past and present; and
WHEREAS, it has been instrumental in preserving the
Hawaiian culture with its close association with the
Hawaiian people and its perpetuation of the Hawaiian
language as evident by its present use of the Hawaiian
Bible and Hymnals; and
WHEREAS,. the Haili Church which now proudly possesses
a cosmopolitan membership including people of many ethnic
backgrounds exemplifies its success in promoting goodwill
and brotherhood amongst all people and thus becoming a
show case of its sesquicentennial motto of "Ua Laa No
lehova" or Dedicated to God,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Hawaii County
Council in recognition of the outstanding total efforts,
respect earned, admiration deserved, and religious awareness
that the Haili Church and its past and present membership
have contributed and won for our community, extends with
profound sincerity and appreciation its congratulations
and continued successes.
DE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk of
the County of Hawaii remit a true copy of this resolution
to Reverend David Kaapu of the Haili Church as a gesture
of our gratitude.
