RESOLUTION NO. 223
WHEREAS, VALENTINE MARCIEL died on May E
in the 68th year of his life; and
WHEREAS, born of a local family in Kalor
VALENTINE MARCIEL had a long and active careen
government and community affairs in Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, VALENTINE MARCIEL was best known as the
former State Comptroller of Hawaii under Governor John A. Burns;
and
WHEREAS, VALENTINE MARCIEL, gave his strength,
imagination, love, and loyalty in his 40 year career with
the government; and
WHEREAS, the creation of the civic master plan of
Honolulu marked the highlight of his career; and
WHEREAS, his contribution and inspiration as founder
of the Volcano Lions Club, the Waioli Lions Club, and Pali
Lions Club, earned him the respect and admiration of his
colleagues; and
WHEREAS, VALENTINE MARCIEL' S 33 years of devoted member-
ship with the Lions organization in positions of Secretary,
Treasurer, Vice President, President, Zone Chairman, District
Governor, and Director of Lions International, symbolized
one man's loyal effort in promoting the civic and moral
welfare of others; and

WHEREAS, his perfect attendance record of 33 years
stands out as an achievement matched by few within the Lions;
and
WHEREAS, VALENTINE MARCIEL contributed countless hours
in organizing and aiding in volunteer diabetic clinics through-
out the island; and
WHEREAS, his every action demonstrated his obligation
as a true citizen -- giving unswerving loyalty by word, by act,
and by deed -- he gave. freely of his time, labor, and means
to this end; and
WHEREAS, VALENTINE MARCIELIS philosophy was that true
friendship existed not on account of service performed by
one to another, but that true friendship demanded nothing --
accepting service in the spirit in which it was given; and
WHEREAS, his devoted and faithful service will be
remembered with deep respect and admiration, as well as grati-
tude for making Hawaii a better place to live;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII that this body extend its deepest condolences
to mark the passing of VALENTINE MARCIEL and note his services
to the people of Hawaii.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk be and is
hereby directed to transmit copies of this resolution to his
wife, Helen Marciel, and to each of his children, Valentine, Jr.,
and Mrs. Kuulei Flores.
