HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 231 Draft 01 1972-1976RESOLUTION NO WHEREAS, Hawaii is famous throughout the world for its flaming volcanoes, beautiful climate and .any races living 9 in relative harmony, and UMEREAS,, the Portuguese people have formed a colorful segment of our cosmopolitan population since 1875 when settlers from Madeira and the Azores first arrived to the Hawaiian Islands after the Chinese and prior to the Japanese; and WHEREAS, the Portuguese community has vigorously promoted .0 the economic, cultural, social and religious goals of the islands for approximately 100 years; and TATHEREASt the Portuguese,, besides being noted for its malasadas, sweet bread and sausage, has been credited with the braginho, later called the ukulele, to the islands; and WHEREAS, Luis de Camoens, the Portuguese Shakespeare, is traditionally honored on June 10th as Portugal's National Day, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that Monday, June 10, 1974, be celebrated as Portuguese National Day in honor of the contributions and achievements attained by one of the island's many cult,-.ures in promoting the quality of life in Hawaii, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk be and is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this resolution to the Honorable Frank G. Serrao, Consul for Portugal. Dated at Hilo, Hawaii this 5th day of June., 1974. ---------------- ----------------------------
