County of Hawaii—State of Hawaii
Resolution No. 239 -
WHEREAS, the island of Hawaii is basically an agriculturally
oriented and economically dependent on the sugar industry; and
WHEREAS, the sugar industry employs 5,700 workers in the
State of Hawaii, 1,700 of whom reside on this island; and
WHEREAS, of the 117 million dollars worth of income generated
from the production of sugar, the island of Hawaii's share is
44 million dollars; and
WHEREAS, the expiration of the SUGAR ACT may result in
detrimental long-term effects to Hawaii- and

WHEREAS, the SUGAR ACT provides for sensible regulation and
control of sugar production; and
WHEREAS, the elimination of these controls may place the
industry in the same position as the pineapple canning industry,
which is gradually leaving the islands for cheaper foreign labor
markets; and
WHEREAS, the uncontrolled production of sugar might have
unpredictable and harmful results to the world market;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that this body express its deep concern for the continua-
tion of the SUGAR ACT.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk be and is hereby
directed to transmit copies of this resolution to the Governor
of the State of Hawaii, the President of the State Senate, the
Speaker of the State House and the members of Hawaii's delegation
to Congress.
