HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 243 Draft 01 1972-1976OFFICE INFORMATION ONLY Meeting: June 19, 197+ Action: PTZAED Re: Res. 243 County of Hawaii --State of Hawaii Resolution WHEREAS, amnesty does not do away with the legal system but rather is an intentional, legal, forgetting of past offenses; and WHEREAS, there are historic precedents for amnesty; and WHEREAS, amnesty would not necessarily undermine future draft systems; and WHEREAS, amnesty would assure the international community that this nation is capable of justice tempered with mercy; and WHEREAS, Canada and Sweden, to the extent that they are burdened by the presence of American exiles, would probably welcome an amnesty; and WHEREAS, amnesty may speed the realization of the Vietnam War's true character; and WHEREAS, amnesty would erase a double standard and stop the prosecution of those who refused to participate in immoral and illegal actions in Vietnam; and WHEREAS! many men who would now benefit from an amnesty sought in vain a conscientious objector status; and WHEREAS, amnesty would serve to heal the wounds and divisions of war and to restore confidence in government on the part of those who have been alienated by the war in Vietnam, NOW! THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that the people support the drive for amnesty. Dated at Hilo, Hawaii this 19th day of June, 19 74 .
