Resolution No. 2'43
WHEREAS, Young Brothers, Ltd., has filed a petition
with the Public Utilities Commission requesting an increase in
the minimum freight rate from $4.25 to $5.10 per bill of lading
and all other freight rates found in its Local Freight Tariff
No. 4-A by 19.2 and
WHEREAS, granting Young Brothers, Ltd's request will
have a detrimental effect on the people of the Big Island
resulting in irreparable harm; and
WHEREAS, the Big Island farmers and ranches heavily rely
on the transportation services provided by Young Brothers, Ltd.,
to have their products shipped to central distribution points;
and
WHEREAS, granting of said request will drive up the retail
prices of the products of the Big Island farmers and ranchers
resulting in substantial loss of their food market to Mainland
competitors; and
WHEREAS, granting of said request will have an adverse
economic impact on the Big Island in that the farmers and
ranchers comprise a substantial portion of the Big Island's
economic base; and
WHEREAS, granting of said request will hurt the Big Island
consumers in the form of forcing them to pay higher prices
for, as well as probably denying them, goods; and
WHEREAS, the recent emphasis on the importance of the
agriculture industry will likely result in an increase in
volume of agricultural products shipped by transportation
provided by Young Brothers, Ltd., resulting in a probable
increase in its revenue without having to increase freight
rates,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII that it strongly recommends that the Public
Utilities Commission deny the petition by Young Brothers,
Ltd., for an increase in its existing rates and charges.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of
Hawaii be and is hereby ordered to transmit true copies of
this resolution to Mr. L. W. Dolim, Chairman of the Public
Utilities Commission, as testimony of the County's opposition
to the application of Young Brothers, Ltd., in Docket
No. 2514, and to the Mayors and Councilmen of the Counties
of Maui and Kauai, urging them to join in protest against
the requested freight increase.
Dated at Laupahoehoe Hawaii, this 25th day of
September , 1974.
