RESOLUTION NO. S -A-4
WHEREAS,r the Hawaii Jaycees conducted a state-wide search
for an individual who has made significant contributions towards
physical fitness; and
WHEREAS, JOSEPH "WOODY" HARRIS, a former licensed powder -
man who was totally disabled during an accident on his job, was
named the recipient of the Physical Fitness Leadership award;
and
WHEREAS, "WOODY" HARRIS' primary activity has been in
working with disadvantaged children and young adults in the
Lanakila Housing Project where he resides, and
WHEREAS, in spite of his disability, he coaches T -Ball,
volleyball, softball and basketball, and has risen above his
handicap to the point where he 'is more active in recreation
and physical fitness education today than when he was able to
maintain a regular job.- and
IMEREASt "WOODY" HARRIS has served in various capacities
in such organizations as Yoshi's Sports Club, Hilo Umpire's
Association, Big Island Referees' Association, Big Island
Volleyball Officials' Association, Lana iia Crusaders and
Fil-American Bengals Softball Club- and
WHEREAS,, "WOODY" HARRIS,, as a humanitarian., has taken into
his household eight nieces and nephews when their real parents
passed away.- and
WHEREAS, "WOODY" HARRIS has exhibited perseverance in
the face of formidable odds and gave love and compassion when
perhaps he should have more appropriately been the recipient,
NOW., THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII that it takes this means to congratulate
JOSEPH "WOODY" HARRIS on being the recipient of the Physical
Fitness Leadership Award and for his personal victory of
overcoming his physical disability.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of
Hawaii be and is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this
resolution to JOSEPH "WOODY" HARRIS and the Lehua Jaycees.
