COMM. 21
COUNTY CLERK
From: Edward McLaren COUNTY OF HAWAII
To: Council Testimony
Subject: ACCESS TO 132 1U 19 JAN -7 t 9: 45

We respectfully request that council members and Mayor Kim lend your support to Ms.
Ashley Kierkiew in the effort to re-establish temporary access to our properties via Highway
132. Our farm is TMK 3-1-402-003-0000-000. We have been tax payers for many years and
are experiencing incredible hardships being removed from our home. My husband and I are in
our 70's and since we were forced to evacuate in May we have had a difficult time finding
lodging. For 3 months we lived in the tent city in Pahoa with our five dogs. (the only thing we
were able to get out) During that time I was hospitalized due to the incredible infection I got
there and when discharged got the infections all over again. After sleeping in our car for
several days we found a small unit where we were allowed to stay for two weeks. After that
we were once again in the tent city until it closed. We then moved into a house where we
exchanged labor for rent. That house has now been put on the market so once again we are
looking for a place to live. We are desperately counting on you to help us so we can go home
as with high rents and pets it is impossible for us to find a place. All of us realize it will not be
the perfect road we are only asking for a temporary road so we can access our property's so we
can begin to rebuild and repair. We have hiked, over the lava to check our property's and feed
the remaining 3 out of 5 cats that managed to survive but that is extremely difficult to do
because of the sharpness of the lava rock plus the fact we are in our 70's and find it a very
trying hike. Our property is one mile from the GMO plant and it is heart wrenching to go that
far and know that I could be home in 10 minutes if only we had some temporary access. So I
am asking you all please please help us as after 8 long months many of us are at the end of our
rope and just don't know where to turn. Money and help has dried up and we are now pretty
much on our own. If you could give us some time frame onwhen this could happen we would
have some piece of mine.
Sincerely,
Pauline K. McLaren
