x1 'mss The Bamboo Mountain Group, a unique partnership of businesses and
~ organizations, have come together to establish a bamboo agricultural and bamboo
~ product manufacturing project, along the Hamakua coast. We aze interested in
~ purchasing five Kapulena properties which the County acquired in 1994 from the
Hamakua Sugaz Company and which the Mayor has been directed to find uses for
Iir ~ by the County Council.
~ We are interested in the following parcels:

l The partners in Bamboo Mountain Group have come together in this
venture because we believe in the potential of bamboo for economic and
agricultural diversity in Hawaii. Our reseazch and current business activities have
'}t convinced us that bamboo is a resource which would help Hawaii move towazds a
• I more sustainable and more self-reliant future. This project is multifaceted and
would begin with land clean-up and preparation for planting. It would in time,
successfully culminate in the manufacture of building materials and furniture for
local use and for export. Throughout the development of this venture, the local
• ~ community would benefit greatly through jobs and economic stimulation. Currently
our group is represented by:

? Bamboo Mountain Imports-National distribution of bamboo products
? Earth Media Hawaii-Local environmental /educational organization

We aze currently exploring more strategic alliances that would add to the
~ projects overall viability and success, and would enhance the potential benefits to
the local community as well. We are negotiating with several universities, schools,
nonprofit organizations, businesses and individuals we hope will come on boazd
and assist us in the near future. At this time we aze anxious to enter into an
agreement with the County to purchase the lands identified, so we can continue
~ putting all the elements of our business plan and budget into place. We welcome the
~ opportunity to make a special presentation to the CouncIl, explaining in depth our
xy _~ns and providing materials which will convince you of our honorable intent,
- f ~ determination and realism regarding this bamboo agricultural, forestry and
manufacturing project.
