A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT
AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A
DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT. TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO THE MERRIE
MONARCH FESTIVAL TO ASSIST WITH EXPENSES RELATED TO THE REPAIR
OF THE AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM AT THE AUNTY DOTTIE THOMPSON
HALE.
WHEREAS, the Merrie Monarch Festival is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that
perpetuates the memory and legacy of King David Kalakaua through an internationally
renowned annual celebration of hula and Hawaiian culture; and
WHEREAS, the Merrie Monarch Festival is the main tenant of the Aunty Dottie
Thompson Hale, located at the Ho`olulu Complex in Hilo; and
WHEREAS, after years of declining performance, the air conditioning system at the
Aunty Dottie Thompson Hale failed in 2018, requiring costly repairs; and
WHEREAS, the Merrie Monarch Festival is requesting assistance with these costs
related to the repair of the air conditioning system at the Aunty Dottie Thompson Hale; and
WHEREAS, the Department of Parks and Recreation supports clean, safe, and well-
maintained facilities at the Ho`olulu Complex; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawaii County Code,
Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via
resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event,
activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now,
therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that
Contingency Relief funds from Council District 2 will be appropriated to the Department of
Parks and Recreation to provide a grant to the Merrie Monarch Festival to assist with expenses
relating to the repair of the air conditioning system at the Aunty Dottie Thompson Hale.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawaii hereby
transfers/appropriates the following amount as set forth below:

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the County Clerk shall transmit a copy of this
resolution to the Director of Parks and Recreation and Director of Finance, and that the Director
of Finance is hereby authorized to make the necessary transfers in accordance with the terms of
this resolution.
