Please do not approve the doubling of the GE Tax for Hawaii Island residents.
Kudos to County Council member Tim Richards for voting "no" on the increase.
The GE Tax is a tax on almost everything, not only groceries. It's a tax plus a tax
plus a tax. Costs have gone considerably up in all areas due to the latest increase.
Personally, I see increases in most of my general expenses this year. The additional
increase will create hardships for seniors, middle income, low income residents,
seniors and the self-employed. Typically, GE Tax increases do not go away. We
may end up paying for the rail in Honolulu.
As far as roads, transportation and trails, there are other means to pay for this
instead of over taxing residents. Many districts have "roads in limbo" which will
not benefit from the promised improvements. In my small District 8 approved
subdivision, the County would not replace a stop sign and the five (5) residents
split a cost of$900 to replace it on their own.
Please do not blame this GE Tax increase on the eruption. People who chose to
live in Lava Zone 1 made that choice on their own. Those choosing to live
elsewhere should not have to pay for their misfortune.
Council members, please reach out to your districts personally and ask those who
have elected you if this is what they want. Please no more taxation.
