Resolution No. 340
WHEREAS , a parking area for the Kona Agricultural
Experiment Station of the University of Hawaii has been
proposed on the location presently occupied by 1 1/2 acre
orchard of grafted macadamia nut trees ; and
WHEREAS , these 30 year old trees have the distinction
of being the oldest grafted macadamia nut trees in Hawaii ;
and
WHEREAS, tests on this experimental plot has provided
valuable information including yield records , responses to
different methods and kinds of fertilization, and other
cultural findings ; and
WHEREAS , the results of the experiments on these trees
furnish our local macadamia nut industry and farmers with
a means of resolving some of their problems for this important
industry; and
WHEREAS , to determine the long range effects of particular
experiments and to continue present testing, the fate of
these endangered trees must be spared.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII that it does hereby endorse and support
the preservation of the macadamia nut trees at the Kona
Agricultural Experiment Station.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk be instructed
to forward a true copy of this resolution to Dean C . Peairs
Wilson of the University of Hawaii College of Tropical
Agriculture , the Honorable Herbert T. Matayoshi , Mayor of
the County of Hawaii and all State Senators and Representatives
from the Island of Hawaii .
