HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 359 Draft 01 1972-1976 County of Hawaii—State of Hawaii Resolution No. 359 WHEREAS, the National Society of Professional Engineers recently observed their traditional National Engineers Week with the theme, "Engineering - Exploring New Energy Frontiers" ; and WHEREAS, the United States and the State of Hawaii in particular are faced with a major challenge of finding new alternatives for energy to eventually replace oil, natural gas, and coal, and thus become more self-sufficient; and WHEREAS, we realize that the task of finding and harnassing new energy sources takes years of research and development; and WHEREAS, the County of Hawaii is fortunately blessed with natural sources of energy which have heretofore been untapped; and WHEREAS, the County of Hawaii, through the direction of the County Council and the Administration, recognizes the desire and the need to place a major emphasis on scientific research and development as one of the major industries of tomorrow; and WHEREAS, energy alternatives such as geothermal and ocean thermal layer are now being investigated or initiated as major research projects; and WHEREAS, there are other available natural energy sources in the County of Hawaii, one of which is wind power; and WHEREAS, the Big Island Chapter of the Hawaii Society of Professional Engineers at its annual banquet on February 22, 1975, adopted a resolution that the County encourage the University of Hawaii to establish research facilities for wind power on the Big Island; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it endorses the Chapter in its stand that the University of Hawaii establish research facilities for wind power on the Big Island. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii be and is hereby directed to transmit copies of this resolution to the Honorable George Ariyoshi, Governor of the State of Hawaii; the Honorable John Ushijima, President of the State Senate; the Honorable James Wakatsuki, Speaker of the State House of Representatives; and Dr. Fujio Matsuda, President of the University of Hawaii.
