WHEREAS, a heroic act of bravery occurred on Saturday, March 29, 1975, when MICHAEL SAKAMOTO was credited with the saving of the life of Eddie Kuahiwinui; and WHEREAS, the incident involved the capsizing of Kuahiwinui 's fishing canoe several hundred yards off shore in rough, choppy, and dangerous waters of South Point, Kau and WHEREAS, MICHAEL SAV,MOTO at the risk of his own life voluntarily and courageously entered the open sea with only a life vest and a life line to assist the struggling and apparently helpless Kuahiwinui; and WHEREAS, had Michael not initiated this deed of personal heroism, the on-coming darkness and the weakening of Kuahiwinui, would have precluded success of any rescue efforts and a possible serious tragedy; and WHEREAS, for this feat of unselfishness and compassion for a fellow human being, MICHAEL SAKAMOTO deserves public recognition and commendation, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII, that in tribute to MICHAEL SAKAMOTO for his quick thinking and daring life saving mission publicly accords him praise and commendation for his meritorious action. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk be directed to present a true copy of this resolution to MICHAEL SAKAMOTO. Dated at Hilo, Hawaii, this 9th day of April, 1975.
