Resolution No. 378
WHEREAS, the Island of Hawaii is basically agriculturally
oriented and economically dependent on the sugar industry; and
WHEREAS, due to consolidation and environmental restrictions,
the Hilo Coast Processing Company' s Wainaku sugar factory is
tentatively scheduled to cease operations on December 31, 1975;
and
WHEREAS, over the years, the Wainaku factory has provided
employment for our island peoples and has been a familiar
landmark on the Hamakua coastline; and
WHEREAS, until a few years ago, guided tours of the
Wainaku factory offered an invaluable educational experience
to visitors and island residents alike about sugar processing;
and
WHEREAS , the Wainaku factory should be preserved as a
historical center and a major visitor attraction, so that
future generations will be left with a reminder of the pioneering
efforts of the sugar industry,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII that it requests the Hilo Coast Processing
Co. , Ltd. and C. Brewer and Co. , Ltd. , to consider donating
the land, equipment, and buildings of the Wainaku factory to
the County of Hawaii as the first step in implementing the
goals of this resolution.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that true copies of this resolution
be sent to Murray Stewart, President of C. Brewer and Co. , Ltd. ,
William B. Case, President of Hawaiian Sugar Co. , Ltd. , William
Kenda, President and General Manager of Hilo Coast Processing
Co. , Ltd. , Francis I. Pacheco, President of the United Sugar
Cane Planters Cooperative, the Hawaii Island State Legislators,
Mayor Herbert T. Matayoshi, the Hawaii Visitors Bureau, the
Hawaii Island Visitor Industry Association, the Hawaii Island
Chamber of Commerce, and the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and
Industry of Hawaii.
