HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 400 Draft 01 1972-1976 County of Hawaii—State of Hawaii 00 Resolution No. 4 WHEREAS, taro is a tuberous root stock plant and is a staple in the diet of many people in the State of Hawaii and the world, especially in the Pacific Basin Area; and WHEREAS, it has been recognized that steps should be taken to insure a viable taro crop for the present and future generation of Hawaii and the world; and WHEREAS, an excess of $100,000 was appropriated to the United States Department of Agriculture for taro research but has not yet been released to the agency designated to expend the funds--the Cooperative State Research Service of the United States Department of Agriculture; and WHEREAS, the Cooperative State Research Service is authorized to release funds allocated for taro research to the Hawaii Agricultural Experiment Stations of the College of Tropical Agriculture, University of Hawaii; and WHEREAS, the inability to obtain funds appropriated by Federal agencies for taro research in Hawaii has severely inhibited the State of Hawaii ' s efforts to proceed with taro research, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it respectfully requests that the funds appropriated to the United States Department of Agriculture for taro research be released to the Cooperative State Research Service of the United States Department of Agriculture in order that it may, in turn, release such funds to the College of Tropical Agriculture' s Experiment Stations for use in the taro program on the Island of Hawaii. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk be and is hereby instructed to transmit copies of this resolution to the Honorable U. S . Senator Hiram L. Fong; Honorable Herbert T. Matayoshi, Mayor of the County of Hawaii; the Administrator of the Cooperative State Research Service of the United States Department of Agriculture, Washington, D. C. 20250; and Dr. Leslie Swindale, Associate Director of Hawaii Agricultural Experiment Stations , College of Tropical Agriculture, University of Hawaii.
