HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 424 Draft 01 1972-1976 eiS County of Hawaii—State of Hawaii Resolution No. 424 REQUESTING THE HAWAII CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION TO INITIATE LEGISLATION TO EXEMPT CERTAIN STATE AND COUNTY EMPLOYEES WHILE ACTING AS PRECINCT OFFICIALS FROM THE PROVISIONS OF THE FEDERAL FAIR LABOR STANDARDS ACT WHEREAS, the employees of the State of Hawaii and the Counties of Maui, Hawaii , Kauai , and the City and County of Honolulu are now subject to the minimum wage and maximum hours provisions of the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act; and WHEREAS, a number of those employees act as precinct officials and therefore work additional hours during election times ; and WHEREAS , the state and counties are now required to pay government employees serving as precinct officials at a rate of time and one-half while non-government employees are paid straight time for the same service; and WHEREAS, such payments are an unfair discrimination and inequity in the payment of election officials. NOW , THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it take this means to respectfully request the Hawaii Congressional Delegation to initiate legislation to exempt government employees while acting as precinct officials from the provisions of the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii be and is hereby directed to transmit true copies of this resolution to the Honorable Daniel K. Inouye, United States Senator; the Honorable Hiram L. Fong, United States Senator; !P r \ the Honorable Spark M. Matsunaga, United States Representative; and the Honorable Patsy T. Mink, United States Representative.
