COMM. 122
COUNTY CLERK
COUNTY OF HAWAII
From: Julie Kron
To: Council Testimony
Subject: More Officers for Puna 70 19 MAR I I Ali 8: 54
Date: Sunday,March 10,2019 7:31:41 PM
Aloha,
My name is Julie Kron and I am the Neighborhood Watch Captain for Fern Acres. I got
involved with our neighborhood watch nine years ago after our home was broken into and it
took almost three hours for officers to respond. I took over as Watch Captain about a year and
a half ago.
I fully support our police department and officers. I am 100% behind the request for more
officers for the Puna district. Currently, the response time for calls is ridiculously slow. There
is just not enough officers.
Our neighborhood watch team actively patrols our 25 miles of roads. We assist the police
department the best we can by being the eyes and ears in our community. However, there are
many known criminals living in our neighborhood, wreaking havoc. Many times we see
these wanted criminals and call the police, but by the time the officers make it up here, the
criminals are gone. We need more officers!
Our community does not feel safe knowing we cannot rely on the police to get here in a timely
manner. Many are ready to resort to vigilante justice to take back our community. I am a
paralegal by trade and try my best to encourage people to follow the law, but when the law
doesn't seem to be working because of an officer shortage, it's difficult to not join in with the
others encouraging vigilante justice.
Gun fire, stolen vehicles, break-ins, drug deals, drug houses and chop shops are the norm in
here. However, if we had more officers readily available to actually patrol and respond to
calls in a timely manner, the crime would be greatly reduced.
Council members, I plead with you, for the safety of our community, please approve the
request and funding for more officers in the Puna District.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Julie Kron
