RE: Resolution 87-19 Testimony before the County Council
I recently became aware that Temple Children, LLC is going to be spearheading a
project to paint the long concrete wall at the Pahoa Pool.
I would've been happy to see that wall covered in a magical South Puna/Pahoa
scene, designed by our local artists and perhaps painted by students from the four
Pahoa area schools. Then it would be something this traumatized community could
feel was healing; now, and in the future.
How in the world did anyone who lived through what we have just been through this
past year, think we want to look at lava eruptions, however awesome or stylized?
We need water, not fire: that's why we love our pool.
I am a retired high school Art teacher from here in Puna and I'm regularly in touch
with a great many folks in local arts organizations and individual artists. Yet, as far
as I can tell, none and of these individuals or groups have ever been contacted
about the project. There has been no RFP from the County, which operates the
pool, or the State, which owns the pool property.
I'm curious as to how Ms Tsukazaki Australian artist/partner got this contract, and
from what agency. I wonder what the process was by which they got the contract?
I'd like Councilwoman Ashley Kierkiewicz, Ms.Tzuzaki and/or Mr."MEGGS" (as
representatives of Temple Children) to give this body their replies to the following
questions:
1. Who is paying for this mural? Where is the money coming from?
2. Can Councilwoman Ashley Kierkiewicz explain her involvement in getting
approval for this project?
3. Has Ms. Kierkiewicz acted as a media consultant for Temple Children LLC?
4. What was the process was by which Temple Children, LLC got the contract?
5. May we please see the request for proposal?(RFP) sent out by the people
paying for the mural?
6. Please describe the benchmarks the group paying for the project asked for in
the proposals.
7. And then, please describe the process the group paying for the project went
through to choose this artist and this art.
8. What is the evaluation process? May I see the evaluation form for the project?
(3, 4 and 5 would have been described in the RFP)
Thank you for your time, attention and replies to my questions.
