Aloha Council,
I am writing in opposition to Resolution 87-19, introduced by Councilmember Kierkiewicz.
The first thing I'd like to point out is that Councilmember Kierkiewicz is the Regional Director
of the Temple Children organization, and stated in a December 2018 video interview that she
intended to bring this organization to Puna. The bias to work with this group, and the lack of
outreach to talented Puna artists, smells very fishy to me, especially when Councilmember
Kierkiewicz has already had ethics complaints filed against her.
Furthermore, to propose a mural in a small town, recently traumatized by a natural disaster,
and not consult with the community, is highly insensitive. Puna is home to a disproportionate
number of talented artists, many who have worked with local keiki on other mural projects.
To not include them in the planning stages of a public art installation is inconsiderate. That
the subject matter will include imagery from the eruption is a threat to the mental health of
those who have endured great loss and grief already.
Please do not support this resolution. The Pahoa pool was previously decorated with a mural
done by local high school students. Kua 0 Ka La had a beloved mural done by a local artist.
Murals should be celebrated works of art for the community, by the community - not painful
memories of recent trauma done without input by artists we've never heard of.
