Dear Chairman Chung and Council Members:
It is my pleasure to nominate Dr. John Burns, Ph.D. of Council District 1 to the
Environmental Management Commission. Dr. Burns is an Assistant Professor in
Marine Science and Data Science at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
Dr. Burns obtained a BS in Biology with Concentration on Marine Biology and Fisheries
and a minor in Philosophy from California Polytechnic State University SLO. He earned
a Ph.D. in Biology, Specialization in Marine Biology and an MS degree in Tropical
Conservation in Environmental Science from the University of Hawai'i at Hilo.
Dr. Burns volunteers his time to numerous community organizations especially doing
outreach education to local private and public schools.
Originally from South Africa and educated in the United States, Dr. Burns has called
Hawai'i his home the last ten years.
He states that he is not a member of any political party. If confirmed, Dr. Burns may
serve a 5 year term to end December 31, 2023.
