Your Committee on Public Safety, to which was referred Communication No. 176, reports as
follows:
Communication No. 176, transmitted by Mayor Harry Kim, dated March 8, 2019, nominates
John Bertsch to the Police Commission.
Mr. Bertsch stated that he is honored to serve and appreciates the opportunity. He gave some
comments on his prior service. He mentioned that he was able to sit at the table previously as a
police chief was being considered. He understands that the commission is bound by the Charter
and is pleased that the Salary Commission will be coming forth with revisions that pertain to the
salary for the position. Hopefully with revisions to the salary more applicants will come forward
to apply for the position to give a broader selection process.
Council Members as a whole are in support of the nomination. Chair Villegas stated that
Mr. Bertsch is not required to appear before the Council for final approval.
The Committee on Public Safety is in accord with the purpose and intent of Communication
No. 176, and recommends confirmation of the appointment of Mr. John Bertsch to the Police
Commission.
