No. 174 <br /> PLACE: Council Chambers <br /> Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i <br /> TIME: 1:23 p.m. <br /> Council Chair and Members <br /> Hawai`i County Council <br /> Hilo, Hawai`i 96720 <br /> Your Committee on Planning,to which was referred Communication No. 174, reports as follows: <br /> Communication No. 174,transmitted by Mayor Harry Kim on March 8, 2019, submitted for the <br /> Council's review and requesting a favorable confirmation of his nominee, Dean Au,to the Windward <br /> Planning Commission, having previously served in this capacity as well as on the Board of Appeals. The <br /> communication described Mr. Au as a"self-employed contractor and a Representative for the Hawai`i <br /> Regional Council of Carpenters—Hilo Field."It further noted that Mr. Au had been a lifelong resident <br /> of Hawai`i and an active community member who currently volunteers his time with Hawai`i Island <br /> Food Basket, St. Joseph Schools and St. Joseph Church, Hawai`i Island United Way, and Hawai`i Island <br /> p p Y <br /> Humane Society. <br /> Executive Assistant Rose Bautista and Mr. Au appeared before the Planning Committee via <br /> videoconference from the Hilo Council Chambers. Ms. Bautista introduced Mr. Au and presented an <br /> overview of his qualifications and experience as noted in Communication 174. Mr. Au explained that he <br /> had been on Hawai`i Island since 1994 and took pride in volunteering for the community in various <br /> capacities. He noted he was honored to be able to serve on the Windward Planning Commission for a <br /> second time. <br /> Committee Vice Chair Sue L. K. Lee Loy and Council Member Herbert M. "Tim" Richards thanked <br /> Mr. Au for"stepping up" to serve as he was an ideal candidate to fill the position due to his experience <br /> in the construction industry and the extensive volunteering he has been engaged in over the years. <br /> Council Chair Aaron Chung stated that Mr. Au was, "intelligent, articulate, and most importantly, <br /> knows how to listen," in addition to being uniquely qualified. Committee Chair Ashley Kierkiewicz <br /> noted that Mr. Au's expertise was needed and that his service in the community, "knows no bounds." <br /> Planning Chair Ashley Kierkiewicz notified Mr. Au that he was not required to appear at the full <br /> Council meeting on April 10, 2019. <br /> Pursuant to Section 6-7.3 of the Hawai`i County Charter, the Windward Planning Commission shall <br /> consist of seven members, and shall be appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Council. <br /> PC Report No. 14 <br />
