Aloha Councilmembers,
Please OPPOSE BILL 16 regarding rezoning for the benefit of Piilani Partners.
The Planning Commission, on March 19,denied‘the SMA for Piilani Partners due to
ecological and other reasons and protection of the PUBLIC TRUST,the water. These reasons
still apply.
I would highly suggest that this Council read the six reasons from the Planning Commission
for their denial.
Why would the Council allow a single-use water bottling plant in Hilo when we are
trying to get rid of plastic?
Why would the Council allow hydraulic fracking for a 1000 ft.well on an island prone to
earthquakes and lava flows? Fracking has been know to cause earthquakes in areas that
were never previously prone to earthquakes.
Why is it that the introducer of this Bill 16 is continually pursuing helping Piilani
Partners rather than to listen to the testimony of the people? Over 50 people attended the
SMA hearing for Piilani Partners and about 30 people gave testimony to oppose: scientific
and ecological reasons, in protection of a Public Trust resource. There were many more
email testimonies in opposition.
We all have a moral and ethical obligation to protect a Public Trust resource rather than
promote a corporate venture which would have very little return to the people of this
island. They stand to make millions of dollars and they want to give $100K donation? This is
NOT a good deal for the County.
If the introducer of this Bill 16 wants economic growth for this island, please pursue
conversion of existing farming into more sustainable farming. Puna needs economic
development now, more than ever before.
