Resolution 1N7i. 432
WHEREAS, representatives of Hawaiian Airlines have
informed the County of Hawaii and Waimea-Kawaihae residents
of a frequency cut back of services to the Waimea-Kohala
Airport, which is designated to begin on July 1 , 1975 , and
run through Labor Day; and
WHEREAS, the residents of the Waimea-Kohala-Kawaihae
and Hamakua communities , who rely heavily on passenger plane
service through the Waimea-Kohala Airport, will be seriously
and adversely affected by Hawaiian's frequency cut back to a
once-a-day afternoon flight to Honolulu via Hilo; and
WHEREAS, the commercial and farming industries of
Waimea, as well as Kohala, which has terminated its long-
standing sugar industry, substantially depend upon sufficient
air transportation service; and
WHEREAS, the selection of the one afternoon flight
from Waimea via Hilo to Honolulu is against the practical
and social interests of the Waimea-Kohala-Kawaihae-Hamakua
passengers who will be faced with evident reservation
problems; and
WHEREAS, furthermore, the selection of the said one
afternoon flight is against the commercial interests of the
farmers whose fresh produce, if not bumped off at the Hilo
station, will be subject to spoilage losses since the flight
will arrive in Honolulu late in the evening; and
WHEREAS, a cut back of service during the summer months ,
when there is peak air transportation demand by vacationing
tourists and island residents is a grave mistake which
undoubtedly will affect the economy of the affected areas ; and
WHEREAS, because Hawaiian is in a non-competitive market
at the Waimea-Kohala Airport, a frequency cut back at the
Waimea-Kohala Airport will eventually lead to a complete
elimination of vitally needed air service.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII that it goes on record as supporting the
crucial concerns of the residents of Waimea-Kawaihae-Kohala and
Hamakua communities and opposing Hawaiian 's designated frequency
cut back of air service to and through the Waimea-Kohala Airport.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of
Hawaii be and is hereby ordered to transmit true copies of
this resolution to the Honorable George Ariyoshi, Governor,
State of Hawaii; the Honorable John T. Ushijima, President
of the Hawaii Senate; the Honorable James Wakatsuki, Speaker
of the House; the Hawaiian Aeronautics Committee; Mr. E. Alvey
Wright, Director, Department of Transportation, State of Hawaii;
Mr. Richard Penhallow, President of the Waimea-Kawaihae
Community Association; Mr. Kenneth Char, President, Aloha
Airlines; and Mr. John Magoon, President, Hawaiian Airlines .
