WHEREAS, Hilo, Hawaii, was fortunately selected to
be the host city for the 25th Annual Hawaii Canoe Racing
Association Championship Regatta; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii County Council has been supporting
the local efforts of canoe racing enthusiasts in revitalizing
this ancient Hawaiian "Sport of Kings" ; and
WHEREAS, canoe racing has over the recent years been
cultivated and has sustained the interest of a growing
number of participants as well as spectators and
WHEREAS, this worthy endeavor of preserving what was
once an important part of the past Hawaiian culture and
heritage has now been rejuvenated intr.-, prominence by the
people of modern Hawaii which includes not only Hawaiians
but also the various other ethnic stra.3s that now make up
our cosmonolitan ponulation,
NOW, THEREFOR:, BE IT M.:SOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII that in recognition that canoe racing was
and will continue to be of importance and significant to the
people of Hawaii, wish to commend the Hoku 0 Hawaii Canoe
Racing Association and all those peo7,,le responsible for
making the 25th Annual Hawaiian Canoe Racing Championship
Regatta a success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County
of Hawaii be and is hereby directed to transmit true copies
of this resolution to the Association and to Mrs. Kuaana Kekua,
widow of John Kekua, to whom this regatta is dedicated.
