WHEREAS, the loss of visual perception by disease or congenital
disorders can cast a shadow over the social and physical qualities
of life of an individual; and
WHEREAS, medical research faces a tremendous but not insurmount-
able challenge in overcoming ailments associated with visual
disorders; and
WHEREAS, to promote public awareness of this worthy cause,
the Mayor of the County of Hawaii, in conjunction with the thirteen
Lions Clubs on the Island of Hawaii, has proclaimed November 1-30,
1975, as Sight Conservation Month; and
WHEREAS, for many years, the beneficence of the Lions has been
especially evident in sight conservation programs as proven by the
sponsorship of glaucoma detection clinics and the Hawaii Eye
Foundation which accepts human corneas for eye transplants; the
collection of used eye glasses for distribution throughout the
world, the sale of brooms produced by the blind, pre-school visual
testing, and participation in the activities of Ho'Opono, the
rehabilitation center for the visually handicapped in Honolulu; and
WHEREAS, the Lions' endeavors in youth activities, Little
League baseball, the mentally retarded, the physically handicapped,
and scholarships to exceptional students, also merit praise and
further tribute; and
WHEREAS, during October 16-18, 1975, the Lions will be sponsoring
a diabetic and anemia clinic for the general public,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII, that it recognizes and commends this honorable legion
of dedicated humanitarians who have unselfishly put forth countless
hours and dollars in promoting sight conservation programs, and
for fostering the spirit of brotherhood and goodwill in Hawaii.
E IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk be and is hereby
directed to transmit true copies of this resolution to Mr. Richard
Mortemore, President of Akaka Lions; Mr. Kazuo Komura, President
of Banyan Lions; Mr. Kreston Nagao, President of Hilo Lions;
Mr. Masashi Chiba, President of Hilo Crescent Lions; Mr. Herbert
Daimonji, President of Kau Lions; Mr. Haruo Nakamura, President of
Puna Lions; Mr. Edward Nakamura, President of Waiakea Lions;
Mr. Taishi Tomono, President of Volcano Lions; Mr. Marty Sebastian,
