Resolution No. 483
WHEREAS, the commodity, sugar, is economically necessary
in the production of many food commodities; and
WHEREAS, the sugar industry plays a vital role in the
economic, social and political fabric of the State of
Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, the failure of Congress to re-enact the Sugar
Act has caused widespread fluctuation in the sugar prices
thereby creating uncertainty among sugar suppliers; and
WHEREAS, the re-enactment of the Sugar Act will give
the consumers a fair price for sugar and the suppliers a
fair return; and
WHEREAS, the re-enactment of the Sugar Act is needed to
restore marketing stability in the industry and to provide
assurance that domestic sugar production will continue to
remain viable,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII that it goes on record as unanimously
supporting the re-enactment of the Sugar Act and that it
strongly requests the Hawaii State Association of Counties
to give its whole-hearted support to the re-enactment of the
Sugar Act.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of
Hawaii be and he is hereby directed to transmit true copies
of this resolution to all the Congressional representatives
•
of the State of Hawaii, to. all State Legislators of the
County of Hawaii, to the Hawaii State Association of Counties
and to the Hawaii Sugar Planters Association.
