WHEREAS, STEVE VERIATO, son of Mr. & Mrs. George Veriato
of Hilo, has become the first Big Islander to earn the right to
participate in the prestigious PGA golf tour; and
WHEREAS, after six days of competition at the 6800-yazd
Magnolia Course at Disney World in Orlando, Florida , STEVE VERIATO
qualified by placing fifth with a 428 score and walked home
with a $500 prize; and
WHEREAS, STEVE VERIATO, aged 29, will now he competing on
the professional golf tour which opens on January 8, 1976 , with
the Tucson Open in Arizona; and
WHEREAS, while stationed at Homestead Air Force Base, STEVE
VERIATO set numerous golf records and more recently, won more
than $27,000 in the professional "satellite" or "mini" golf
tournaments; and
WHEREAS, STEVE VERIATO spent February, March and April in
Asia where he competed in the Philippines, Hong Kong, Thailand,
Maylasia, Indonesia, Singapore, India, Taiwan, Korea and Japan,
where he finished fourth for his best performance of the swing;
and
WHEREAS, in July, he played in the European pro tour which
took him to Switzerland, Germany, Sweden and Holland; and
WHEREAS, STEVE VERIATO, a graduate of St. Joseph High School
in 1964 and at the age of 18, was the youngest winner of the
Big Island Amateur Golf Tournament.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that it takes this means to congratulate STEVE VERIATO
for being the first Big Islander to qualify for the PGA golf
tour and to wish him continued success in the upcoming Tucson
Open.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk be and is
hereby directed to transmit true copies of this resolution to
STEVE VERIATO and to his parents, Mr. & Mrs. George Veriato.
