Resolution No. 492
WHEREAS, the jet black sands of Kaimu Beach on the Island
of Hawaii, long considered one of the world' s unique attractions
has been gradually eroding due to tidal action; and
WHEREAS, after much discussion and study, a decision has
been reached to restore Kaimu Beach to its former self and to
protect it against future damage; and
WHEREAS, a concurrent program to construct a breakwater and
to replenish Kaimu' s lost black sand, has been endorsed by the
Governor of Hawaii, Hawaii Island legislators, County of Hawaii
Administration and Council and the Board of Land and Natural
Resources; and
WHEREAS, while Federal funds for beach erosion control were
previously available under the U. S. Corps of Engineers, the
County of Hawaii was informed on October 9, 1975, that such
funding has been depleted.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that it respectfully request the Hawaii Congressional
delegation for Federal assistance in the Kaimu Beach erosion
control project.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
be and is hereby directed to transmit true copies of this resolution
to the Honorable Senator Hiram Fong, the Honorable Senator Daniel
Inouye, the Honorable Representative Spark Matsunaga, the Honorable
Representative Patsy Mink, the Honorable Governor George Ariyoshi,
the Hawaii Island legislators, the Board of Land and Natural
Resources, the U. S. Corps of Engineers and the Honorable Mayor
Herbert Matayoshi.
