HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 506 Draft 01 1972-1976 RESOLUTION NO. 506 WHEREAS , public transportation provides an integral service to a community; and WHEREAS , for over 40 years , the colorful sampan bus fleet met this need in Hilo by affording citizens reasonably priced transportation to various destinations ; and WHEREAS , sampans are unique to Hilo as the cablecars are to San Francisco, and offered a photographic treat to tourists reminding them of their visit to Hawaii; and WHEREAS , many years have lapsed since the original sampans made their debut and time taking its toll , has seen the gradual demise of this bus fleet which once numbered 73; and WHEREAS , although a modern fleet of new County buses have arrived and are slated to replace the sampans , residents and visitors who have been fortunate enough to ride these quaint vehicles , will not permit these fond memories to erode in the past. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it takes this means to recognize and thank the remaining members of the colorful Hilo sampan bus fleet for their long years of service and for making a definite contribution by adding a unique and distinct flavor to the Island of Hawaii . BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii be and is hereby directed to transmit true copies of this resolution to Casimero Duyag, Rosendo Juan, Agapito Rabanes , Andres Tapawan, Juan Valinton, Margaret Laigo and Mabel Godoy.
