WHEREAS, during the early morning hours of November 29 ,
1975, an earthquake of tremendous magnitude and registering
7. 2 on the Richter scale rocked the Island of Hawaii causing
extensive tidal wave damage and stirring volcanic action; and
WHEREAS, in the wake of this disastrous event, it was
learned that DR. JAMES MITCHEL, 56, a prominent Hilo physician,
was killed while on a camping trip with a group of Boy Scouts
on Halape Beach and
WHEREAS, despite a busy schedule, DR. JAMES MITCHEL had
been known to find great recompense in working with youths and
in exploring the outdoor; and
WHEREAS, the tragic and unexpected passing of DR. JAMES
MITCHEL leaves a tremendous void in the medical society and in
our community where he practiced with selfless dedication; and
WHEREAS, although we lament his untimely death, let us
find comfort in the great service and contribution to mankind
that was his life.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that it does hereby honor the memory of the late
DR. JAMES MITCHEL, a skilled professional and humanitarian, and
extend condolences and deepest sympathy to his family.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of
Hawaii be and is hereby directed to transmit true copies of
this resolution to his widow Mrs. Josephine Gordon Mitchel,
and to their children Robert Mitchel, Mrs. Carolyn Sharp,
Mrs. Van (Patrice) Tua'au and Mrs. Joey (Rebecca) Keahilihau.
