WHEREAS, CHRISTOPHER L. BROWN, 29, has been named the Big
Island' s 1976 Teacher of the Year; and
WHEREAS, CHRISTOPHER L. BROWN, a math teacher at Kohala
High School, has instructed students in the eighth to twelfth
grades for the past seven years; and
WHEREAS, in his efforts as an educator, he emphasizes two
concepts--first, . . . "to give the student a background in
mathematics that he can apply to situations that arise in his
interactions with other people and second, to make the student
realize that he is an individual whose feelings and concerns
are universal and at the same time unique. " ; and
WHEREAS, CHRISTOPHER L. BROWN, who grew up in Ridgefield,
Connecticut, attended Boston College for advanced education
and comes from a family where his mother and several aunts were
also school teachers; and
WHEREAS, while in Boston, he worked with the Montessori
School and became involved in the Charlestown Tutorial Program
for underprivileged children which reaffirmed his decision to
enter the field of education; and
WHEREAS, today he serves on the Hawaii State Teachers
Association "youth committee" , belongs to the Kohala PTSA,
assists yearly with the Halloween Fun Night, was instrumental
in the formation of a chapter of the American Field Service in
Res. 1';o.

Kohala, worked as a student council advisor for four years
and is an active member of the Catholic Church.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII that it takes this means to recognize and
extend congratulations to CHRISTOPHER L. BROWN for being
named the Big Island's 1976 Teacher of the Year.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of
Hawaii be and is hereby directed to transmit true copies of
this resolution to CHRISTOPHER L. BROWN and to William McPeek,
principal of Kohala High and Elementary School.
