WHEREAS, WILNETTE WILSON, an 18 year old University of
Hawaii Manoa student, has been selected the 1975 Athlete of
the year; and
WHEREAS, WILNETTE WILSON, the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Ross
Wilson of iiilo, is an all-around athlete who has excelled in
softball, track and tennis, the latter, an event which she
has mastered in a short span of three years; and
WHEREAS, after dominating girls' tennis in the BIIF, she
swept into the finals of the Hawaii State High School Athletic
Association as tourney favorite and defeated Punahou's
Linden Caldwell 6-2, 5-7, 6-1; and
WHEREAS, in May, WILNETTE WILSON copped top honors in the
State-wide Punahou tournament, playing both singles and doubles,
and also captured the championship of the State Jaycees Junior
Tennis Tournament; and
WHEREAS, after winning the State sectionals in June, she
qualified for a competitive tour of the Mainland with stops
at Memphis for the National Clay Court Championships and
Philadelphia for the National Grass Court Championships; and
WHEREAS, in November, the Hawaii Tennis Association named
her tennis sportsperson of the year and at the same time
released rankings placing her at the top for girls' singles; and
WHEREAS, she is only the fourth female to be named
Athlete of the Year and is presently on a tennis scholarship
at UH-Manoa,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII that it congratulate and commend WILNETTE
WILSON on being selected the Big Island' s Athlete of the
Year for 1975.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of
Hawaii be and is hereby directed to transmit a true cagy of
this resolution to Wilnette Wilson.
