Resolution No. :F {
WHEREAS, the Waimea-Kohala Airport is the only port for
passenger travel to and from the North Hawaii area; and
WHEREAS, the several communities in North Hawaii,
comprised of some 12 ,000 residents, depend on the convenience
and necessity of the Waimea-Kohala Airport for travel to and
from Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, these communities are comprised of ranchers,
produce farmers , sugar workers and participants in diversified
agriculture who require air access to other island markets;
and
WHEREAS, these growing communities accommodate an
increasing number of retirees whose homes and land values
are related to quick and easy access to air services,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII that it goes on record supporting the crucial
concerns of the Waimea-Kawaihae-Kohala and Hamakua communities
and urges Hawaiian Airlines to service these communities
by providing daily scheduled service to the Waimea-Kohala
Airport.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the State of Hawaii provide
for the lengthening and widening of the runway at the
Waimea-Kohala Airport to encourage and ensure that members
of the Waimea-Kawaihae-Kohala and Hamakua communities will
be able to enjoy the convenience and necessity of regularly
scheduled air transportation to and from the Waimea-Kohala
Airport.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of
Hawaii be and is hereby instructed to transmit true copies
of this resolution to the Honorable George Ariyoshi, Governor,
State of Hawaii, the Honorable John T. Ushijima, President
of the State Senate; the Honorable James Wakatsuki, Speaker
of the State House of Representatives; Mr. E. Alvey Wright,
Director, Department of Transportation, State of Hawaii;
Mr. Richard Penhallow, President of the Waimea-Kawaihae
Community Association; Mr. Kenneth Char, President, Aloha
Airlines; and Mr. John Magoon, President, Hawaiian Airlines .
