Resolution No. 530
WHEREAS, on February 11, 1976, the United States Senate
Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs will be conducting
a public hearing in Hilo, Hawaii, to receive testimony on a
proposal for the enactment of Hawaiian Aboriginal Claims
Settlement study; and
WHEREAS, this proposal would ultimately give its fullest
attention and consideration to the needs and concerns of the
Hawaiian Aboriginals and make a full and complete study with
a purpose to determine, with finality and certainty, the nature
of the legitimate claims of, and the extent of injuries to,
the Hawaiian Aboriginals; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii County Council is in accord with
and has previously supported the basic philosophy of the
Hawaiian Claims Settlement Bill now pending before the United
States House of Representatives, which seeks redress through
the Congress of the United States for just reparations for
the loss and displacement of lands which once belonged to
the Natives of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii County Council is hopeful that this
esteemed Senate Committee will be convinced upon seeing and
hearing the people of Hawaii that legislation supporting this
movement would be worthy and deserving for the United States
Congress to consider,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII that this body is convinced that the United
States government was responsible for the loss of dominion
and domain on the part of the Hawaiian Aboriginals and that
they and their descendants never received and rightfully
deserves compensation.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we are confident that the
welcomed hearings will provide meaningful data that will
enhance the study and more importantly prove our contention
for just and due compensation for the Hawaiian Aboriginals;and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Hawaii County Council
extends to the Senate Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs
every success in their hearings and wish them a pleasant and
safe visit during their stay in Hawaii; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of
Hawaii be and is hereby directed to transmit true copies of
this resolution to the Honorable Daniel K. Inouye, United
States Senator, the Honorable Hiram L. Fong, United States
Senator and to each member of the United States Senate Committee
on Interior and Insular Affairs.
