Resolution No. 534
A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING CONTINUATION OF STATE FUNDING FOR THE LEGAL
AID SOCIETY OF HAWAII
WHEREAS , the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii has provided much
needed legal services to low income persons on the Island of Hawaii
for many years ; and
WHEREAS , the Hilo Office of the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii
is presently providing legal assistance for over one thousand
clients annually who would otherwise be unable to afford legal
assistance; and
WHEREAS , these services have enabled low income and disadvan-
taged persons to receive legal assistance for family problems ,
consumer disputes , evictions and other legal concerns ; and
WHEREAS , without continued State funding the Legal Aid Society
of Hawaii will be unable to continue effective legal service to the
poor.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it strongly supports the continuation of State funding
for the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii so that it may continue to
provide legal service to Hawaii' s poor.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
be and is hereby directed to transmit true copies of this Resolution
to the Honorable George R. Ariyoshi, Governor of the State of Hawaii;
the Honorable John T. Ushijima, President of the State Senate; the
Honorable James Wakatsuki, Speaker of the House of Representatives ;
the Honorable Donald Ching , Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Com-
mittee; the Honorable Stanley Roehrig, Chairman of the House Judiciary
Committee; the Honorable Richard Wong , Chairman of the Senate Ways
and Means Committee; the Honorable Jack Suwa, Chairman of the House
Finance Committee ; Senator Stanley I. Hara; Senator Richard
Henderson; Representative Herbert Segawa; Representative Yoshito
Takamine; Representative Minoru Inaba; and the Honorable Herbert
Matayoshi, Mayor of the County of Hawaii .
