Resolution No. 5'1 I
WHEREAS, a marked increase in medical malpractice
premiums has besieged physicians and hospitals in the State
of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, the exorbitant increase in the medical malpractice
premium has made it professionally difficult for physicians
to practice; and
WHEREAS, because of the exorbitant increase in medical
malpractice premiums, many hospitals are threatened with the
possibility of closing down their facilities; and
,* WHEREAS, Hilo Hospital is currently facing the possibility
of curtailing the emergency room coverage because of the
impending resignations of physicians affiliated with Hawaii
Emergency Physicians Associated,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII that it goes on record as unanimously
urging the Governor and the State Legislature to provide a
reasonable solution to the exorbitant increase in medical
malpractice insurance before an acute crisis precipitates.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of
Hawaii be and is hereby directed to transmit true copies of
this resolution to the Honorable George Ariyoshi, Governor,
State of Hawaii; the Honorable John Ushijima, President of the
Senate; the Honorable James Wakatsuki, Speaker of the House;
the Honorable Anson Chong, Chairman of the Senate Committee
on Health; the Honorable Herbert A. Segawa, Chairman of the
House Committee on Health; the Senators from the County of
Hawaii, Senator Stanley I. Hara, Senator Richard Henderson,
and Senator John T. Ushijima; and to the Representatives
from the County of Hawaii, Representative Minoru Inaba,
Representative Stanley H. Roehrig, Representative Herbert A.
Segawa, Representative Jack K. Suwa, and Representative
Yoshito Takamine.
