HomeMy WebLinkAboutBIL 124 Draft 01 1992-1994 COUNTY OF HAWAII STATE OF HAWAII BILL NO. 124 ORDINANCE NO. AN ORDINANCE NAMING THE KONA GYM LOCATED AT KAILUA-KONA. BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII : SECTION 1. Findings and Purpose. The purpose of this ordinance is to name the new gym located at Kailua-Kona, pursuant to Article 8 of Chapter 15 of the Hawaii County Code of 1983 , which establishes guidelines for the naming of county parks and recreational facilities. SECTION 2 . Notwithstanding any other law to the contrary, the new gym at Kailua-Kona is hereby named Liliuokalani Gymnasium. SECTION 3 . Pursuant to Section 15-67 (b) (5 ) , the following information is provided : Liliuokalani was the last monarch of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Educated in the Chief ' s Children' s School, she had taken part in many benevolent works for the Hawaiian people. She was gifted musically, and left a legacy of beautiful and haunting melodies. Prior to ascending to the throne, she had served twice as regent in King Kalakaua' s absence. She led the battle for a new constitution which would restore voting rights to the Hawaiian people . Forced to abdicate to protect the lives of her supporters, she remains a symbol of the continuing struggle for Hawaiian sovereignty and recognition. • SECTION 4 . In the event that any portion of this ordinance is declared invalid, such invalidity shall not affect the other parts of this ordinance. SECTION 5. This ordinance shall take effect upon its approval .
