No. 221 PLACE: Council Chambers Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i TIME: 9:15 a.m. Council Chair and Members Hawaii County Council Hilo, Hawai`i 96720 Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Communication No. 221, reports as follows: Communication No. 221, transmitted by Mayor Harry Kim, dated April 4, 2019, nominates Isabella Hughes to the Merit Appeals Board. Ms. Rose Bautista, Executive Assistant to Mayor Kim, introduced Ms. Hughes, who appeared in person. Ms. Hughes graduated from Punahou School, attended Boston University where she obtained her Bachelor's degree in Art History and also holds a Master's degree in Museum Studies from John Hopkins University. Ms. Hughes is President and co-founder of Shaka Tea, which is a company that bottles and flavors mamaki tea drinks. Ms. Hughes is also an independent curator and Director Emeritus and board member of Honolulu Biennial Foundation. Ms. Hughes was present in Hilo and expressed her willingness to serve on the Merit Appeals Board. Council Members and Chair David commented in favor of the appointment. Chair David stated that Ms. Hughes does not need to appear at the next Council meeting for confirmation of her appointment. Pursuant to Article VII, Chapter 1, Section 7.1.2, Hawai`i County Charter, there is established a Merit Appeals.Board, which shall consist of five members, appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Council.
