Kamehameha Schools (KS)is submitting testimony in support of the resolution. Keaukaha is an important kipuka for us in our strategic plan as this area is home to the largest concentration of Native Hawaiians in Hawai`i County. We are heavily invested in Keaukaha and have a historic presence there. As part of this presence,KS owns 47 parcels totaling 234 acres in the`iii kupono of Honohononui. We have developed a management plan for Honohononui and have begun conversations with the community with the intent of moving forward with portions of that plan. Ten of those parcels are adjacent to Keaukaha Road, which is the subject of this resolution. We believe the proposal to close Keaukaha Road to Kamokuna Road nightly aligns with our plans for the area and will help bolster the safety of our community and reduce illegal activity. Kamehameha Schools was established by the will of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop for the purpose of educating Native Hawaiian children. As such,we have a fiduciary responsibility to ensure that Kamehameha Schools' lands are administered in support of our trust obligations and educational mission. We see Resolution 141-19 as one more useful tool to assist the community with creating an environment in which our kupuna, keiki and ohana can thrive. Mahalo for the opportunity to submit testimony in support of Resolution 141-19. . Comm. NR., Ref.To: Ref. Date MAY-2.1 2019
