Subject: Olson Bills 83, 84 and Hawaiian Cemetary Desecration
Aloha Council Members,
My organization, Aloha Lokahi Association, a 501 c 3 non-profit established to preserve Hawaiian culture,
is saddened, disheartened, appalled and frustrated that Mr. Olson has desecrated Hawaiian burial
grounds. Mr. Olson should know better. Hawaiian protocol demands that any land excavated, bulldozed
or in any way disturbed, be checked to ensure it is not a culturally significant place. Our burial grounds
are sacred as are all burial grounds with the ancestors laid to rest.
I am writing to urge the Council to respect these burials by respecting procedure. Please postpone your
vote on the Olson Trust application for a zoning change until the pending violations for the cemetery
desecration are resolved, and SHPD can review the AIS and the Burial Treatment Plan.
Even though Mr. Olson has gathered and submitted the remains of our dead, that in no way absolves his
actions.
Even though Mr. Olson has destroyed what was a Hawaiian cemetery, it does not mean that the land is
no longer sacred.
Even though Mr. Olson believes that the destruction of the Hawaiian cemetery is done and he can move
forward, that is still a Hawaiian cemetery, it is still sacred, and NO further desecration should be allowed
until due process if followed.
Mahalo for your consideration and taking seriously the act of violence that has been perpetrated upon our
people, living and dead.
Once the violations are resolved, then State Historic Preservation Division will be able to fulfill the
required review of the Archeological Inventory Survey and Burial Treatment Plan. This must all be in
place instead of putting the cart before the horse as the Planning Commission seems to be
recommending.
