Having worked with you in the past, it is my sense that your work at the Western Justice Center Foundation, coupled with your recent op-ed series in the Honolulu Advertiser, has considerable relevance for elected officials and the residents of Hawaii island. As you know, several recent issues, including forestry initiatives, an irradiation plant, geothermal development, and Mauna Kea Summit expansion plans have caused some significant concern and division within our island community. The current reviews of the County General Plan and Charter, mandated once every ten years, offer unique opportunities for community participation and constructive dialogue or, alternatively, further divisiveness. I believe the time is ripe to consider not just the issues, but also how we can relate to and address them. The need to incorporate the spirit of aloha in our work together has always been important, and given the magnitude of these two reviews now before island residents, I believe the embodiment of aloha is vital to our very survival and future well-being. The committee setting offers a public forum for you to share your thoughts on this matter, and its proceedings are televised for public access. In consideration of your own busy schedule and frequent mainland trips, I would like to propose either Tuesday, June 22vd ,Wednesday, July 7°i, or Tuesday, July 27`". Committee meetings are usually held beginning at I :00 or 1:30 p.m., and presentations are normally made near the beginning of the meeting. Please contact Rory Flynn, the legislative assistant who initially contacted you, at 961-8564 to coordinate a suitable date for your presentation. Thank you for your willingness to share your perspectives. I look forward to hearing from you soon. S' cerel t J. ~urt~Tyler, III, Chair Huma rvices and Economic Development Committee Comm.
