Subject: Regarding Mauna Kea
Thank you for accepting testimony from the community regarding Mauna Kea. Though we live on O'ahu,we
are very aware of the affect that the destruction of the Mauna will have on all of our islands. We understand
that there are people who wish that the telescope should be built and our disagreement is not with the telescope,
it is with putting it on Mauna Kea.
We have many concerns but our biggest are directed at the safety of all people in our islands. To keep this
email testimony short, we will bullet the concerns:
* The county, cities and state do not have clear plans for when construction begins on the Mauna for the safety
of the workers nor those who will stand in protection. This lack of clarity will lead to greater possibility of
injury or death to humans.
* There is no indication that the training which has recently occurred for law enforcement officials, DOCare etc.
meets the standards that will ensure the safety of all involved. Has their training only been in military weapons,
like the LRAD and multi-fire weapons or also in deescalation?
* Who is funding the militarized response to peaceful protectors on the Mauna? Why are we the Hawai'i State
taxpayers funding these actions for private corporations and foreign governments?
* Have all permits truly been lawfully submitted?Has an outside entity verified that this is true and how does an
EIS from 2010 validate a CDUP?
* The 8 criteria for building in a conservation district have not been met.
* Actual accounting of the jobs and$$ that will enter our islands because of the TMT have not been accurately
portrayed. Hearing the same PR spiel from the Chamber of Commerce and Business members who will benefit
(not the entire community) is not a proper accounting.
* This has already caused public health issues in terms of emotional, psychological and social trauma. Our
concern is also on public health as they manifest in our people and our children. Are schools being given funds
to help them help their children and communities? We are also concerned on the physical trauma and injuries
and their impacts. Are Hawai'i island hospitals prepared to deal with these emergency situations? We
understand that the LRAD and of course semi-automatic weapons have severe impact on humans.
*Tactics of intimidation have already occurred and continue which are not in agreement with our local,
Hawaiian values. Taking down the ahu and hale while "decommissioned" telescopes await a plan,purchase of
the L-RAD and other items,the UPSWING in PR from the businesses and people with money on media all are
part of those.
We hope that this giving of testimony is not just a box check for all of you. WHY? Because we truly are
concerned for the safety and lives of everyone who is involved.
It is a very serious concern. Please think if protecting the $$ of foreign governments, corporations and the US
military is worth the lives of the people?
We think not and will stand with the protectors always.
